TR, I just went through your previous post and the link and the first 20 comments and will read the rest later. I just wanted to mention "The Glass Palace" by Amitav Ghosh which I just finished reading. It is not a good novel but it is readable and covers much of the terrotory that you mentioned.
Possible. I got the name of the novel wrong. I think that the translators sometimes changed the title. Bharati is the name of one of the characters in Pather Dabi (by google search)and it may be the novel I had in mind.Apparently, it was banned by the British.

This is a very distant memory. Sarat's "Bharati" describes some of the immigration to Burma and lifethere.
